The Beginnings

"All the things we experience in life can be separated into two realms, the realm of the concept and the realm of the senses. Our identities belong permanently to the conceptual world They can't be seen, heard, smelled, touched or tasted. They're merely ideas. They're merely ideas and everything else at the start belongs to the sensual world, the world outside of us.

"Gradually, we reach beyond ourselves."

--Scott McCloud, from Understanding Comics, The Invisible Art

The idea motivating this blog is the same idea that motivates you to dress the way you do, to speak the way you do, and to communicate the way you do: We are creatures of concept. What we display in our outward appearance is our own concepts of self. Media are very much extensions of that idea.

So we, as a class, will use the media that we carry with us daily to create a conceptual space for dialogue about media and the ways we are using it in order to create and/or propagate the concepts of communication. We will leverage cell phones to make videographic and photographic posts. We will text message in commentary on class or on current events. We will serve as a living document of our second life: our vision, our concept.
